This one was for the many thousands of people out there who have never given up hope that Fast Eddie Clarke will one day play with Motorhead again. And the two and a half thousand people who witnessed something very special in Germany on Saturday night.
Throughout the preparation and build up to the gig, things had been kept fairly low key publicity wise. However, behind the scenes, the excitement level was simply electrifying...
In younger days, the quality of the music at a gig may not always have been the most important ingredient but any connoisseur of Motorhead will tell you that although all of the other necessary components of a Motorhead show remain firmly in place, the standard of musicianship has dropped. Punters have been crying out for years to hear the classics played properly and in the way that they were written. On Saturday night, we heard those classic Motorhead songs played in the way that they should be played.
The familiar introduction to Ace of Spades pumped through the PA and as the track increased its tempo and broke into its hurtling opening riff, so heartbeats and pulse rates increased all around me.
Many were carried away by the music and they weren't all older fans either. Groups of young teenagers went crazy in true traditional 'Head style and all the way to the back of the hall, the noise between the tracks was immense.
Not that there was much time for the crowd to show their appreciation as the band ripped straight into number after number, all of them hitting the mark.
A fair proportion of the audience were not even born when Motorhead were riding high more than twenty years ago. But they knew the songs. Or rather, they knew the versions that they had heard played live before. But they had never heard them played like this and they lapped up every note.
