fast eddie clarke

Into Stay Clean and Claus Larcher actually nailed the bass solo, note for note perfect. They could have done with turning the bass up a little for that and the occasional vocal line was lost, something that could have been avoided by small adjustments at certain points in the songs. But despite the mix not being the best on the night, Bastards took the place apart and Claus rose above these small deficiencies and proved himself to be an accomplished frontman who is more than capabale of performing well under pressure on a huge occasion.

And you can't heap too much praise on the other two Bastards, guitarist Udo Gerstenmeyer and drummer Bernd Heinning. The drums jabbed you in the face, Ali style - no clattering, over cymballised rumble here - and he got the drum riff to Overkill right as well. Eight beats per roll instead of the three that we have been rationed to over the last few years...

Udo's rythym was spot on with no loose guitar chuggs or sloppy chord changes anywhere to be heard. The perfect compliment for the original Motorhead master doing what he does best.

The man whose name the crowd chanted between every number was in his element here and I even noticed smiles breaking out as each particularly telling solo reached full flow. It happened a few times and if the chants of 'Eddie, Eddie, Eddie' took the hero of the hour a little by surprise, then there was no need for him to feel that way because those calls were fully deserved. They were a tribute to a great performance by a great player, who has lost none of the fire that was evident when he first pioneered tonight's set list.

Tonight, it was the early eighties again and Motorhead had rediscovered their well honed and disciplined style of playing that has been for far too long now, a distant memory.

Bomber was the pick of the crop in my view. The fever pitch reached maximum level when that particular number burst forth. Capricorn and Metropolis simply shone.
